Chhath Pooja & The Beauty of Homecoming

Chhath Pooja & The Beauty of Homecoming
06 Nov 2024

The sixth day of the Hindu month of Kartika (Oct-Nov) witnesses the celebration of Chhath Puja (“chhath” meaning sixth). The festival which is dedicated to the Sun God is observed over the course of four days.

As you return home to your loved ones this Chhath Pooja,  here’s some gift inspiration to make this trip home all the more magical.

On the first day of the Pooja, devotees take a dip in the river or any body of water and perform special offerings and rituals. The second day involves devotees observing a day-long fast which is broken at the end of the day after worshiping Mother Earth. On the third day of the Chhath, large numbers of devotees gather on the banks of rivers and make offerings, called ‘Arghya’, to the setting sun. Everyone gathers together, playing traditional and rustic Bihari folk songs and celebrating the occasion together. On the fourth and final day of the Chhath, friends and family go to the river bank together before sunrise and make offerings or ‘Arghya’ to the rising sun. After the conclusion of this ritual, devotees break their fast and distribute prasad to their neighbours and relatives.
